HP m1080.uk Multimedia Audio Controller Issue

Hello all,

I do apologise if this has been asked here before but I have tried searching the forums and cannot find a post relating to this model.

I recently helped a friend of mine upgrade the ram in his HP m1080.uk desktop. Having realised that HP don’t seem to want you to upgrade anything (the ram slots are hidden behind the removable hard drive and optical drives) I finally got the new ram installed and the machine back together.

When we turned the machine back on, the ram was recognised fine (at least I did something right). However, the found new hardware wizard came up. This could not automatically find any drivers for the ‘Multimedia Audio Controller’ and failed to install the hardware.

I tried several things that I have done before to fix the sound card. I completely uninstalled the audio drivers and then reinstalled them from the HP System Tools (comes on HP machines) this appeared to reinstall the Audigy II ZS drivers again. However, the multimedia audio controller still had an exclamation mark in device manager.

I tried the optional update via Microsoft update which found drivers for the sound card and the Multimedia Audio Controller, however, these obviously weren’t the correct drivers as the sound still did not work.

I tried restoring the system to a date prior to upgrading the ram, this managed to break the Virus Protection but alas didn’t fix the sound issue.

I also found a link to some drivers on the creative site for the Audigy II ZS but when I tried to run the install program it said it couldn’t find that card in the system (I can only assume HP use a proprietary version of the card).

After another thought, I tried changing the Onboard Sound in the BIOS to enabled rather than automatic. This forced the system to find the same drivers that I had downloaded from the Microsoft site (the ones that didn’t work).

Does anybody know of a way to fix this issue? Are there 2 sets of drivers, one for the sound card and one for the Multimedia Audio Controller? If so does anyone know where I would be able to download these?

I apologise for the long post but I am currently rather embarrassed having told my friend that changing the ram would be a ‘5 minute job’

As stated above, the computer is a HP Media Center m1080.uk Desktop PC

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Jonathan

very strange -- on HP's UK driver page for this model, there is no sound driver offered at all: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...3 126&lang=en

HP explains that in such cases it means the correct driver is already included with the version of Windows that was pre-installed. Evidently that isn't working in your case.

I can only suggest you 'disable' the built-in sound controller in the BIOS to prevent Windows from detecting it and asking for it's driver, then fit a new PCI soundcard in a spare PCI slot. Make sure it's supplied with an XP driver before you buy it.

Jonathan

is this the Creative driver you tried http://support.creative.com/Products...=Sound+Blaster

there are 3 versions of the comp, all use the same motherboard can you post an Everest report
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/...-Edition.shtml

you may need the chipset driver that HP don't offer
