Just a few questions ...

What patches / SPs are installed?

Does the system 'freeze' during a specific game / application or after a certain time?

Have you installed new software recently?

What is your hardware spec?

Freezes after a certain time. I have 17 Hotfix (sp2) installed. I have installed new applications but it's not that. b/c I uninstalled it and same problem. I noticed with the new critical updates it freezes so I system restored to an earlier version where it doesn't freeze. I have a dell 512 Ram 1 ghz pentium 3 100gb hardrive. There is plenty of memory and space. What else can it be? Thanks

After approximately how long after boot up does the freeze up occur?

Does the freeze occur if the machine is left static or do you need to be using an application?

I am having the same problem. I have been searching this issue for a while. This problem exist on a Compaq laptop running XP Home. I have reinstalled the OS numerous times, installing the updates, not installing the updates and either way it would freeze up about once an hour. It would freeze if I was working on it or if it is just sitting there with the screensaver running. I have somewhat solved the problem when reinstalling I selected to try the Fat32 file system and the problem is gone. It never freezes anymore. I have searched as to why and can not find an answer. I would prefer to use the NTFS file system. I have tried reinstalling since with the NTFS and the same problem occurs. Then I go back to the Fat 32 and the problem is gone. Maybe this will help you. I don't know. Maybe someone here knows a way around this.

Possible reasons

If you get the problem with NTFS and not FAT32, maybe there's a program you've installed that doesn't like NTFS. Also, you could go to www.ontrack.com and download their Data Advisor program. Write it to a floppy and test your hard drive. Make sure your hard drive doesn't have any problems.

I ran the Data Advisor program and it said everything "passed". As far as a program causing the freeze this is not so. I have the problem right after XP installs. This is before I have added any 3rd party software(including anti-virus & firewall).
