No sound on XP

Ok, so I got sick of Vista and decided to downgrade back to XP. Re-formatted my hard drive and re-installed XP back. Everything went fine. But now that I have set everything up I no longer have any sound. Whenever sound should come up on things such as MSN I just get a random beep. The sound icon isn't at the bottom right of my screen and I have updated all my sound drivers. When ever I try to play a song Windows Media Player tells me this 'Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly' Has anyone else got any ideas?
