Sony VAIO Laptop Issue

I have a Sony VAIO laptop, model PCG-K23 running windows xp pro sp2. Is is about 4 years old and has worked perfectly up until now. The computer boots up fine but then completely freezes after about 2-3 minutes. If I lightly tap on the computer it will unfreeze for a little less than a minute and then I get the blue screen of death. I have formatted and reinstalled windows several times and have even tried different memory chips which all made no difference. The problem also occurs in safe mode. Does anyone know what piece of hardware is malfunctioning? I was thinking it was probably the hard drive since I think it is the only thing that would actually unfreeze from a light hit to the computer...Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Ok so I recently borrowed a copy of windows xp home from a friend of mine to give that a try on my laptop. I did a complete format and resinstall of windows. Once it finished installing it got into windows with no problems. I then put Wireless LAN drivers on my jump drive, and moved them onto the computer. Half way through installing the LAN drivers, it did the same thing and froze up. This time I did not get a blue screen or anything, just completley frozen. Since there is no blue screen, I am unable to give you the error code. I guess it must be a hardware problem, I just don't know what exactly it is. I restarted after it froze and it froze again at the Windows XP Logo screen, and the next restart it got back into windows and then froze again. Does this seem to be a faulty hard drive? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, this does look like a hardware problem. The last thing I would try is to boot into safe mode just to see if you can get in there. Did you install any drivers? or just copied them accross?
If all else fails the last option if you can not boot into safe mode is to run recovery console http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...torial117.html

You need to run check disk from there.

I was unable to install any drivers. The first one I was going to install was the Wireless LAN driver, which is when it froze half way through the installation. When I had XP Pro on it I was able to run check disk and it did not find any errors. Also, when XP Pro was on it I remember being able to boot it in safe mode and it would still eventually freeze but would take a little long. Does this point more towards a memory problem? Thank you for your help!

The only wat to find out is to go step by step.
http://www.memtest.org/

This is a memory scan which needs to be burnt to a cd as an ISO image.

Ok, safe mode actually seems to work. I was able to run check disk, and install my wireless LAN driver in safe mode.
I ran check disk from safe mode and received no hard drive errors. Then I booted to and ran the Memtest86 program which found no memory errors. "It said Pass complete, no errors..." After installing my wireless LAN drivers in safe mode I attempted to boot to safe mode with networking which did not work and froze at the Windows Advanced Options Menu. So it seems the only way the computer is stable is in regular safe mode. Should I run a CPU test next?
