Desktop blank after login on windows xp

Help for a non computer saavy laptop owner.

My desktop is blank on start up. This happenned after I was running superantispyware and my screen turned black during scanning so I turned off then on my computer and after I logged on I had a blue blank screen welcoming me.

Please note again that I am not too technically knowledgable so any help will be greatly appreciated.

When I have had problems in the past on start up, I was advised to start in the Safe Mode. As I started it, I kept pressing key F8 repeatedly before any screen came up, and it offered me the Safe Mode as a result. Using the up arrow/down arrow I highlighted the Safe Mode option and pressed enter to accept it.

As the computer starts it loads the barest essentials of programs. The first time I did it, it loaded in weird colours instead of the normal blue - I (nearly) panicked at the time! After it finished loading (having given it enough time to load), I then went to start>>Turn Off Computer>> Turn off

A while later I went through the normal starting procedure and it worked for me.
