Problems with my windows XP Home edition

Yesterday I was trying to clean up my system because felt it was getting slow.I went into Admin Tools and was going through services , now I'm not sure what I did...(maybe something to do with trying to open 'DAT files'???? but now all my files in the Extended part of the files list are gone and I can not now open my Dell support center, Norton virus 09, my Search in the Start menu and it will not run the System restore. Also I can not even access the internet.

How to start your computer by using the Last Known Good Configuration feature

To start your computer by using the Last Known Good Configuration feature, follow these steps:
Start your computer.
When you see the "Please select the operating system to start" message, press the F8 key.
When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, use the ARROW keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press ENTER.
If you are running other operating systems on your computer, use the ARROW keys to select Microsoft Windows XP, and then press ENTER.

Ok, starting to sound more like a virus has caused disruption to your system. I would download AVG free and use it to scan the PC.

If that doesn't work then repair the operating system with the XP CD.
