major audio problems

About a month ago, i began encountering problems with voice in the program Ventrilo
tried everything i could to troubleshoot this, no results (uninstalled, reinstalled, etc etc)
i followed my brothers advice saying it was most likely something dealing with out of date audio drivers (as one of the symptoms was that my realtek audio config window was not recognizing microphone, but it was working in all programs except ventrilo)
searched for new audio drivers (no successful luck)
was told to install a realtek HD driver- did so and lost all sound.
uninstalled this driver and still no sound

tried looking for other drivers, but no luck

i'm not extremely computer savvy, so i must admit i am a little bit lost here-- can anyone walk me thru or point out what to do/where do DL drivers that can restore sound to my comp

thanks a ton in advance
