Guys.. Help! Hear Me Please... Sound Problem

Good Day, my name is Tann and I have just recently reformatted my computer due to various problems. Everything runs smoothly now but I have NO sound. Every time I open windows media player and try to play something I get: Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly.

I don't know what happened. When I go into control panel and click sounds and audio devices I can not change any of the settings because the colors are like, dulled so when I try and click on anything nothing happens. It also says no audio device under the volume panel. I don't see what's wrong because I had sound before so I don't know what could have happened. Please help, thanks in advanced.
