problems installing directx 9.0.. purrlease help

Hi
I'm having problems installing direct 9.0 onto my pc. I'm running in honesty a not exactly original copy of windows xp pro... that said I've had no problems installing software in the past including all previous versions of directx.

When I try to install directx 9.0 I get the message (something along the lines of) "This version of directx is not compatible with the version of Windows currently installed".

I've tried the copy of directx 9.0 that came with my Video Card drivers (Radeon 9700 Pro), the downloaded exe file from microsoft and a copy that came with a new game I bought, Elite Force 2. Same each time.

I've used the Windows Update tool on XP Pro and there's nothing new to put on.

Any ideas anyone?
For info, if it helps, my machine spec is..

Athlon XP 2800+
nForce 2 mobo
1Gb DDR400 RAM
Radeon 9700 Pro video card
Seagate Barracuda IV 60Gb HD

Any help would be an absolute ripper.
Cheers!!

Your specs are fine. And your pirated copy shouldnt prevent the download or install of DX 9. Make sure Cryptographic Services is set to Started and Automatic.

Go to START, RUN, and type Services.msc in the run blank.

Hit enter.

Look for Cryptographic Services.

You can try...

Finding an old download of DX 8.0. Install that first, then try installing 9.0. Maybe theres some files missing from 8.0 that it may need to upgrade.
