Hard Drive Woes

Alright guys, this is strange as it can be.
My Windows XP system is having hard drive troubles as of lately. It seems as if periodically bandwidth between my drives and the rest of the system is LOW. For example, I will be listening to an MP3 through WinAmp or Diet Kazaa, and it will begin to pause. The hard drive indicator lights up, caches some more data, and the song plays for 5 seconds or so, then the process repeats. However, the problem just seems to vanish if you give it time. You know the saying: "If it's not broken, don't fix it." I'm not sure if it's 'broken' or not. I've used of Norton's SytemWorks Utilities to try and solve the problem, but not a thing turns up. I am infected with a virus, though I have no idea where it came from. The Nimda virus-- I have no idea what it does, or how it got there, and Norton doesn't care to remove it (POS Virus Scanner merely 'quarantines' it).

I'm an advanced PC user, and this one has me stumped. Here is my current hardware configuration:

AMD Athlon 1.2 GHZ
128 MB SDRAM :-(
IBM 15 GB 5400 RPM HD (hosts windows and applications)
Western Digital 60 GB HD (hosts MP3's and video for editing)
Promise Fastrack 100 TX2 IDE Controller
TDK 48x CDRW
56x CDROM
Nvidia GeForce 4 TI 4200

I think it could be the virus, but then again, there could be some damage to the hard drives. Please help!

you are low on memory you should idealy have 256 running XP for it to run stable so your memory is letting you down a touch mate.

LOOK KERE to find out help over the virus.

when i cannot get rid of a virus i bite the bullet and reformat and reinstall

I would personally leave reinstalltion as the last option,, usually eveyone goes through lots of trouble to get their system set the way they want and formatting it would be lot of work(least to say),, if you are running norton utility then you may want to do a bit of reading on this link.

Here is the irony to the situation:
I've purchased a new mainboard and 512MB of PC2700 RAM, but its been sitting in the box for months because I haven't made the time to set it up. I guess I'll get to that ASAP! Thanks for the help!
