Standby and Hibernate in XP

I have a good system with XPpro/SP3/IE8 and several fully working progems installed but neither Standby nor Hibernate (enabled of course) are available. There was some sort of Microsoft fix to resolve this, but it has made my systen unstable on shut-down which it refuses to do for several minutes and announces it has gone into Standby. I have removed the fix (not an easy process), Love to have some comment please
