Windows wont load
I am really stuck here and need some help!!
Having detected a virus I followed the advice given on the Symantec website for its removal. I was told that some items in the registry would need to be deleted, so I backed up the relevent keys and proceeded to do as told. However I must have deleted the wrong item because now when I start the computer i type in my windows password, it begins to load, then stops loading, says "saving your settings" and then goes back to the password screen. I have no idea what to do to fix this....any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers in advance,
Jimmy

For some reason the machine is automatically logging you off. Here are a few things to try:
1) When the computer is starting up, before the Windows XP screen, hit F8. It will take you to a menu where you can choose a few different options. First try "Last Known Good Configuration".
2) If you have the problem still, boot into Safe Mode. This will disable any startup items. If it lets you login using safe mode, go to c:\docs and settings\yourusername\start menu\programs\startup and delete anything (or everything) that looks out of place.
3) Login as administrator with the password you used to setup the computer, or login as another user.
Let us know if any of these solve your problem.

I just got off fixing a computer that had a similar problem, but it was Win2K. I could not change anything and I really needed to get into the registry through dos to remove an entry,, anyway, after lots of reading and search I saw something on MS site regarding FDISK /MBR ,, is not that I did not know about this command but for some reason master boot record neede to be reset and WALA I that sucker fixed. give it a try as a last resort,,it won't break anything
cheers

Njovin, I tried all those things that you recommended, but even in safe mode the same thing is happening.
Snowmonkey, how do I go about resetting the master boot record?
Once again cheers in advance for your help

Don't mess with the MBR. If windows boots to the login screen, it's not an MBR problem.

Okay I just bought myself some floppy discs so that I could do as snowmonkey said, but is it really not worth doing? Will it cause any damage if I try it?
Also someone recommended me to do a System Restore....how do I go about doing this, and is it possible without being able to get into the computer via safe mode?
Once again thanks for you help, this is really driving me nuts!
