XP Home freezes & Word Crashes

I use XP Home Edition & Word 2002 (part of Office XP Standard) on a Sony Vaio PCG-FXA53 laptop. XP freezes many times each day and needs to be rebooted - sometimes freezes before it finishes booting. Word crashes almost immediately after opening almost 90% of the time and reboots. I see posts by other people on the Internet with similar problems - anyone have a solution?

JRY, This Laptop doesn't seem to that old (Athlon - 1.3 GHz - 30 GB HD - 256 MB RAM - DVD-ROM, CD-RW - Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition ) must be quit new !?! ,, did you always have this problem ? when did it start ? do you recall installing anything before this problem started (even MS patch) ? It's very hard to say what is causeing the lockup,,, I would follow up with laptop MFG as well Microsoft to see what kind of solution they are offering,,,, haveing computer freez on you like the way you are describing it is a nightmare ?

Yes, the machine is fairly new - less than a year. I have updated both XP and Office regularly. I called Microsoft and they suggested it might be a corrupt profile or the machine was overheating but I am not convinced. I communicated with someone else with the same problem and they said their problems started after updating XP with SP1 - I didn't pay attention - maube mine did too. In any case I will call Sony and see what they have to say.
