reboot operating system & not entire machine

I am using win xp pro, & was wondering if it is possible to restart the operating system only after an update e.g. antivirus like you used to be able to with win98 by holding down the left shift key when go to restart

someone please correct me if I am wrong, but I say no because of further integration of ACPI. I think it is still possible to do this on non-ACPI machines. But, I am not sure.

On Xp, It is not possible.
