Mute in Volume control on & off intermittently

My Sound Device is working intermitently.

I traced the Problem back to the Volume control Program.

The Mute Checkbox will activate itself by itself, and then will spontaneously unmute itself, over and over again, in an irregular pace of time.

This results in system sounds operatng intermitently.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this to happen?

It has worked fine over the past 3 years.

The drivers are for Realtek HD Audio.
