Tin can audio

I turned on my computer a couple weeks ago and all my sound seems to be coming from a tin can now. While playing music the music is less affected but the vocals seem far away and in a tin can. This happens with all sounds not just music (iTunes, WoW, internet videos).

I have checked connections and they are fine.
I have tested different headsets.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled drivers dozens of times with multiple sound cards.
I have turned off all sound enhancement effects I could find.
I have even formated and reinstalled XP a couple times.

The computer is a HP Pavilion a1730n.

Any help would be appreciated.

you don't give the OS but this is needed for XP

It's Realtek HD audio, did you install the M$ UAA first, should be in Device Manager/System Devices/Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture.

this needs to be installed - then a Restart of comp - then realtek HD audio

I had an older version of that installed first after the reinstall of XP. I just updated to the version you gave me but I still have the same issues.
