static IP help?

Hey, I am a gaming person and I have a NETGEAR router and it seems that when I am playing net games I can't host any games because of my router, and actually I can't play in the same server with my friend who is also connected to the router on games IE: Starcraft...

If anyone is willing to help me set up static ip's for my computer then that would be great

Unfortunatly without the use of some heavy NAT (network address translation) then it can't be done.

What is effectivly happening is your machine sees the internet via ur router. The internet only sees your router and not anything behind it, this is all part of the system. Your pc is behind a smoked glass window.

What you can try to do is some port mapping, if ur router allows this. You set your router to transfer any incomming ip packets to "this" port to be directed to your pc. this doesnt always work tho.

static ip is nothing to do with ur machine or whatnot. ur isp provides you with the ip u use. it depends if your isp is providing you with a dynamic ip or static ip. if u have a dynamic or semi static ip then u can use the no-ip service. small program which gives ur machine another "ip" and comunicates with other machines to give the effect of a static ip. i forget the name

with starcraft i think its a thing with ip packets with the same port number attached and the router is not sending them to the right machine or thinks to send them all to the same machine, OR it might be because the starcraft servers are just seeing the one ip and assume its one machine, starcraft is from the days of 56k modems etc where Broadband and home networks didnt exist.

also you could try to make it so ur isp alllows u another ip address and you can set your router to provide the other ips to any other machines on ur network.

It may do, i dont know.

This is up to ur isp, its an option you could try and it may still not work.

If you would care to provide some details about the pc's on your network , the type and speed of your internet connection, and the current setup of your network - firewalls etc.

I think i could come up with a solution.

ok well here I go,

I have a NETGEAR RP614 router with 3 computers hooked to it and I am running AT&T broadband internet for all 3...

I have the no-ip program and have 3 different hosted ip's that I have registered (but I don't know how to send them to the router for each computer)

if you can tell me how I can do that then I don't know, maybe that will solve it..

all my computers have the windows firewall disables and my router really doesn not come with a fire wall I don't think so.

I think you're confusing IP with DOMAIN or HOST NAME. At no-ip.com you can have several computer names (myname.httpserv.com) pointing to one IP address. An IP address is something you HAVE to obtain from your ISP, nobody else can give you extra IP addresses. And you almost always have to pay extra for them (upgrade to a business account in the case of SBC).

It seems like the single IP problem is causing the problems with only one of you being able to play games at once. As far as people not being able to get into games you host, you have to forward that port on your router. So if the game operates on port 9999, you have to tell the router to forward all incoming requests for port 9999 to your machines INTERNAL ip address (usually something like 192.168.1.2 or 10.1.1.2).

We can't help you out with HOW to do this. If you need to know what port a certain game runs on, try google. If you need to know how to config your router, read the manual.

yeah.. I got that, but when I forward my port I'm only allowed to forward ports through 1 computer and if I try to make another port forward for another computer with the same ports, then it say's something like dubplicated ports.. As a matter of fact any computer can create and peeps can join for almost any game like counter-strike because I know how to set that up, but it's it's starcraft which is the tuffy because I know it's port 6112 but I don't need to forwad it if it's just me hosting and people joining, and actually when my friend from the other room on the same router connection tries to join the same game, he can't because well I don't know, so can someone help me out with this certain problem...

IE: Explaining how rip packets may help, multiple DMZ servers, and so on

You can't forward the same port to two different machines. You CAN forward different ports to different machined (unless your router sucks).

If your friend is trying to access your game using your PUBLIC IP address, have him try to get in with the INTERNAL address (192.168.xx.xx). If he's already using the internal, have him try the external.

You can't setup multiple DMZ hosts because that would be the same as two machines having the same IP address. As far as computers OUTSIDE your router are concerned, you have to have a seperate broadcast IP for EACH MACHINE.

I think you're stuck, man, just buy another DSL line

I used to work in an internet cafe, we had a router and we had a seperate ip address for each machine, which alowed us to host games. your problem is with having one ip address, unless u want to fork out for another ip address then it cant be done im afraid.

LOL

Fork - empty your life savings into one place and buy another ip address.

i have no idea how much it costs.

If your only a residential service line (home adsl or cable) then i doubt that your isp will alocate u another ip address. you might as well install another phone line and get another adsl account etc the whole whack again just so u can play starcraft with 2 machines.

I have had no problems with any other games with my network, we only have one physical ip address and are behind a linux server which routes our net traffic, eg AVP2,no problems with 2 machines playing on the same server.

quake3, avp2 everquest, deus ex, counter strike, have had no problems playing these games co-currently with my housemates machine on the same server.
