Mouse Pointer morphs into Star Shape on Start Up + disables

Hi Friends,

I am usung a Samsung NC10 notebook with Windows XP + Free AVG.
Recently, after Start Up and all the usual reassuring noises (updates etc), my mouse pointer changes shape from a directional arrow to something larger star shaped and freezes. If I force a 'restart' the problem disappears but I'm just wondering why this happens.

It's something I can live with - booting up twice but if I could fix this, it would make me very happy
