I bought a sound card and tried that, but got the same result so don't think the driver is/was the problem with the onboard SoundMax. I started looking through the forums for Windows related problems.

I don't see the UAA anywhere in the Device Manager. Could that be the problem? If so, where do I get it. I couldn't find it on the Microsoft site? Are there any other required components that should be listed that I should check for?

not sure this will help, you will need a Win XP disc but Try a System File Check
go to Run - type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes and note the space after sfc) - have the xp or recovery disc available in case sfc needs to repair or replace any files

The scan ran for a while then disappeared when it completed so I assume it found everything it was looking for. Oh well.

Can't find anything at Lenovo about the BIOS and I suspect that is where the problem is. Perhaps an email to Lenovo asking about the BIOS setup in relation to audio would get the answer you need. I'm reluctant to tell you to go into the BIOS unless you are familiar with doing this, as major problems can happen which would make your comp unusable.
