No audio - device missing in playback selection menu
I lost all audio a while back on my IBM Netvista A30p, but I don't know exactly when. It was around the time of a Windows update, but I don't know if that's the reason. I tried loading the latest SoundMax driver from the IBM site (accessed through Lenovo), but there was no change. As you can see from the Windows Audio section of the report, SoundMax is not in the list for playback and I can't figure out how to get it back there. Audio is enabled in BIOS. The device manager says the device is working. Any suggestions on what to try? Thanks

check these out
Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device
Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open in left pane click Services(Local) from the tree / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply / click Start > OK Reboot

Thanks, but my problem is that the SoundMax sound driver is not available to select in the menu for playback so I can't select anything except modem #X line playback. Soundmax is available in the record section, but not the playback section. The windows audio serviice was already automatic and enabled.

try installing this way - use the If No Setup File method
Installing Drivers
Create a folder for what you are downloading
Example: Audio
Then download the zipped file to that folder
Then download and install Winzip
Go to the folder and right click and click Winzip extract to here
That will automatically make a folder and unzip files to it (make a note of file path)
Then go to folder and click on Setup file and follow instructions displayed for installation
If no Setup file
1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.
Set a System Restore Point before installing driver just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions

These are the instructions that came with the driver. Even after installing according to the instructions there is still no option to select SoundMax for playback. Is there another way I should try doing the installation? The file is self extracting so I didn't need Winzip. Thanks for your help trying to sort this out.

the problem with Soundmax is that if you use the Setup or exe file XP does not install it, that is why you have to do a force installation, using the If No Setup File method. You basically have to tell XP to use the driver.

Since the driver came as a self extracting exe, I tried following your procedure as best I could. I ran the exe. It created a bunch of files and folders. I tried to do a driver update from SoundMax in the device manager since nothing was yellow flagged. I had to search through the folders when I did the browse to find one that "un-grayed" the ok button. I completed the install and rebooted, but I still ended up in the same state with no SoundMax in the playback selection menu. The hardware tab says the device is operating properly, but the volume tab says there's no audio. It's been like that, but I assumed it was because no device was selected on the audio tab. Anyway, any thoughts on what to try next, or did I not do this process correctly? Thanks

I had high hopes for this one, but alas I'm still getting the same result. I did notice something when installing the audio driver that's not mentioned in the driver installation instructions. It goes through the whole setup, then after rebooting it says it found new hardware and started the wizard to install the driver even though it did the setup before rebooting. Before continuing I checked and verified that I was still showing no audio device. I went through the wizard. It installed stuff in the windows directory as I recall, but still nothing changed even after another reboot. It caught my attention because like I mentioned last time, when I browsed for the location I had to pick the correct subfolder before the ok button became active. It seems like if that were the normal process, the instructions would have said something about it, but I don't know.

I searched the board as best I could. There's a large IBM Rev 1.2 silkscreened on the middle of the board. There's also a small barcode label with a FRU PN 49P1599. Hope that's what you were looking for.

did you get the drivers for the Netvista 8311-4DU model, the only A30 model I can find is a Thinkcentre A30 and this does not have the same version of Soundmax audio driver
Did you install one of these audio drivers
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/si...&validate=true
Is youre audio plug on the I/O plate or in an Expansion slot see here click image to focus

The plug is on the IO plate.
The exact driver I downloaded is:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/si...cid=MIGR-44440
I agree it's a bit confusing. The a30p is almost like part of the name rather than a useful designation. I used the selection dropdown menus and selected the numbers that matched my computer.

This driver appears to do (or not do) the same thing as the other driver.
