How to change username

The OS in my laptop is WinXP Prof. When the harddisk was replaced, I formatted the drive and reinstalled the OS. The laptop was given a username etc.

I wanted to import data from an external storage device (a NAS) which has a different username and password from the laptop.

I am using a web based (i.e. web interface) application which relies on apache, php and mysql. I have to make the mapped folders on this NAS visible to the app.

I can see the data in the mapped drive on the NAS in the window explorer but not in the app.

The reason for this behavior is the appache is logon using the username of my laptop. I have to change the username to match that of the NAS inorder for the app to access the data.

I tried to change the name of the computer administrator and password of the laptop via Control Panel->Change an account->Administrator account.

Rebooted the system and right click on the Apache service in Control Panel->Performance and Maintenance->Administrative Tools->Services.
Brought out the properties dialog box and tabbed on the Log On page. The account still shown the old username.

Wonder if anyone can inform me how to rename the username (the one that you assigned when you started Windows for the first time after the purchase of a new computer or after the installation of the OS in a new drive of the computer in WinXP.

Thanks in advance.

SS

Hello bookworm,
Thanks for the response. Got bogged down by tons of mission impossible tasks.

I had tried the registry key trick you mentioned last week. What happened was the NAS has a username that is differ from my laptop. After I changed the RegisteredOwner Tag in the registry to match the username of the NAS, I clicked on the properties tab of "My Computer", indeed, the name matches. However, when I boot up the laptop, the sign in page (the first screen that asked for password) is still the original laptop username. I check the logon for Apache, it still registered as the original username of the laptop and not the newly reassigned username.

I search the registry for the original username, it came up in 6 or 7 keys. I am too afraid to modify them without knowing I can reboot successfully the next time.

Any helps/suggestions are the most welcome.
