Arrow DivX, Bane of My Existence

So, I'm having trouble with my computer, obviously. I'm on Windows XP, and Directx 9.0c is being insufferable. When I try to run any games, I get a message that "no compatible display devices found". I've tried running dxdiag and it tells me I have no version of directx installed. I've tried installing it, but it tells me I already have it.

Under the "DirectX Files" tab, I'm getting a message that "The file gcdef.dll is an old version, which could cause problems", and under "Display", I'm told the following:
"The system is using the generic video driver. Please install video driver provided by the hardware manufacturer.
To test DirectDraw functionality, click the "Test DirectDraw" button above.
Direct3D functionality not available. You should verify that the driver is a final version from the hardware manufacturer."

I've been looking around online for weeks, and I can't find an answer that works. One place said to go into regedit and delete the directx files there, but I only saw it in one place, and I'm scared I won't be able to install directx afterwards.

Does anyone know what all of this means? It's nearly gibberish to me.
