Unhappy Master Volume Control

I've been running Win XP Pro since March 2003 on an Athlon XP1900 rig I assembled myself. My MoBo is an ECS-Elite K7S5A+ with onboard SiS 7012 Wave sound. It's not obviously the best of breed system but it's good enough for my needs which are pretty basic.

I ran into this weird problem lately where I couldn't bring up the Master Volume Control panel either from the taskbar or from the Audio properties window. It simply refuses to pop up and the Maximize feature is grayed-out when I right-click on the taskbar button for Volume Control.

I have not done any tweaks nor installed any audio software that may have possibly affected the functionality of the volume control panel.

Anyone out there can help explain this and propose a solution?

I would ditch the onboard and get a cheap dedicated soundcard. Although those are odd problems you are having... usually what you get is a sound device not detected or something along those lines. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling? That's pretty weak, but its all I got.
