Angry add/delete programs

hi. i have a problem on my xp. a few days ago i lost all my icons on start up.after reading this forum i managed to to get them back by using task manager then system restore. now i find that start up can be a bit iffy as i don't always get the same page when i start exploer.also if i try to select (add/remove programs) i lose everything again And have to go through task manager again to get my icons back.any help would be apprecited as i am a novice at this kind of thing. thanks in advance.
