Unhappy CD Copier speed not detected correctly.

Hi. I was recently backing up my system. I have a 24 spead cd rewriter. it writes at 24. I finished backup of a cd then for no reason XP Pro detects my cd copier speed as 12 speed write only.

This happened before and Only formatting and reinstalling fixed it.

I must have burnt 60 cds at 24 speed so far in my drives lifetime. So i know theres nothing wrong with it.

I gues my question is why would xp all of a sudden detect my cdwriter as a 12 speed writer instead of the 24 speed writer which it is? When only 5 minutes ago it detected the correct speed.

Help. I dont want to format.

Did you happen to reboot between the time that it was detected as 24x and 12x?

I've heard of this happening with some drives when XP tries to redetect the speed. Have you tried another disk just to rule a faulty disk?

A possible fix would be to boot into Safe Mode (F8 when starting to boot). Go to Device Manager and remove/uninstall the CD Drive. Then reboot normal and let Windows redect and reinstall the drive.

THX very much for your reply MoMan. Ive done exactly as you have instructed and now my CDRW is functioning at full speed. I didnt know about the safe mode process and removing the drive from windows.

THX very much again for helping me out.

All the best

Your welcome.

It was worth a shot before reinstallation.

along the same lines, but skipping a step, stay logged in to your regular account. in device manager, remove the secondary IDE channel, or whichever IDE channel your drive is in, then reboot normally. on reboot, it will be redetected, along with your drives. and hopefully at the proper speed.

Now, I would suggest you replace your IDE cable going to your CD writer. This is caused by your IDE controller reporting errors on that device, so it drops the UDMA mode, and reverts to PIO which is much slower. You can also try unplugging and reinserting the cable you have, but for $3.50 you can have a new cable. Hope this helps.
