html problem

Hello

I have been using an html tutorial from the web geared to Windows 95/98. I am using XP. When I open an html text file, Ido not see the hyper text. The code that I typed shows. As a novice to XP and html, I know yhat I am doing something wrong.

These are the things I have tried:
*Writing code on notepad and using "SAVE" with a filename ending in .html.
*Writing code on word and using "SAVE TO" html text with a filename ending in .html.
*Starting with <html and ending with </html>.
*Checked my tags numerous times.

I am sure the problem is something simple I am overlooking or I may have screwed up some setting. Any help woul be appreciated.

could have been a mistype, but it should be:
<html>

I was a typing error on my thread. I double checked my html files and they are ok. Sorry about that.

Two problems.

1) When you write anything is MSword, and then tell it to "Save as HTML", it actually converts whatever you have written to a web page and saves it. So if you're writing code and save as html, it's going to save it as a web page that displays the code.

2) In notepad, when you save, you have to tell it "All Files" instead of "Text Files" under the box where you put in the filename. Otherwise it will save as page.html.txt, and will still not be right.

A way to check for the second problem is (from windows explorer - NOT internet explorer) go to Tools->Folder options->View and make sure that "Hide file extensions for known file types is NOT checked. that way, you will get to see the TRUE filenames when you are looking at the files in windows explorer.

Thanks for the help. You solved my problem. I learned to drive a car, sail a boat and fly an airplane; even though I am a right brain person, I am coming along with this computer. I don't know all the terminology but I did learn about Belarc and can submit plenty of information next time.
