network connections folder empty

I was experiencing this problem when I made a very important discovery - the startup of my network connections had somehow been reset yo Manual.
This can be changed by goung to Control Panel then selecting Administrative Tools then double click Services.
Scroll down till you find Network Connections and and under the Status column, I am almost willing to bet that it is either blank or set to disabled, and hard to say what is under the startup column.
Right click on Network Connections and select Start (if not already started) then click Properties. In the startup type window, select Automatic by clicking the little down arrow.

Hopefully this will repair your problem

Thumbs up network connections folder empty

Thanks for all the suggestions. It took me up to step 12 (reinstall network adapter) of the KB article for mine to recover. Wish I knew what caused the problem.

Am having the same problem too.

All connection lost after I installed the WUSB54GC hardware along with its driver on my WinXP SP2.

Thumbs down

Prior to reading all of your posts, I went through almost all of the steps in that article on support.microsoft.com that has been posted (825826), to no avail. I've even done all of the things you all suggested that weren't listed in said article (such as uninstalling network cards in Safe Mode, or changing the Network Connections in Services to "Automatic").

Still have the same problem: My Network Connections icons are all missing, and I have no internet connection. I've even tried rolling back to a previous restore point. I've installed Windows and nVidia versions of the nVidia chipset NICs that I have. Still, same problem.

It seems like I'm doomed to a fresh reinstall of Windows.

Here is the fix for 90% of all situations FIRST Verify that the network DLL files are registered correctly: a. Click Start, and then click Run.
b. Type cmd.exe, and then click OK.
c. Type the following lines, and then press ENTER after you type each line. Click OK when the RegSvr32 dialog box appears for each command.
regsvr32 netshell.dll
regsvr32 netcfgx.dll
regsvr32 netman.dll
d. Restart the computer.

Second: type in services.msc see if network connection services is started if not start it. If it gives you an error go to step three

Third: If all else fails this step always works to find out what dll is corrupted ::Click Start, and then click Run.
b. Type cmd.exe, and then click OK.
c: Type in ipconfig it will give you an error this mean that it is identifying your problem whatever dll it gives you needs to be added: (to add a dll do a search for that dll file until you find it on your pc

**If it is found in your sp2cab file or Servicepackfiles/i386 folder right click on the file in the search window and choose extract file always extract to windows/system32 folder**
next type in ipconfig again in the open command window if you get an error again repeat the file extraction.....keep repeating until you get no error or an ip address or no connection

Now open network connections Viola there are your network connections

If still no network connections in folder uninstall and reinstall network card.

helpless

I tried to apply the microsoft 12 steps but at the very first step it failed. when I click on the device manager nothing happens.
I used the three steps too, cmd.exe regsvr32 ... things..still didnt work.
someone has offered opening the add remove prog under the control panel but add remove prog section does not open just as the device manager...
in the run cmd.exe thing I also typed services.msc even no box appears.. no dll errors are listed when I type ipconfig either.
I uselessly tried to download some dll s from the given site as suggested but it says another person or program is using it..so I couldnt download them either..

it seems like nothing is working..as for the last solution you have advised the network card to be uninstalled and re installed and how is that done for god's sake..? ouuhh

ok here's my solution I had erased java sun creative media and some other spce occupying files. that was when all that trouble started.
After having tried doing the same directions in the safe mode, seeing nothing worked again, I restored the pc to the time right before I had erased those programs..so things just turned out to be fine..thanks to everyone anyway

Hi there, I'm experiencing exactly the same problem with a few extras!

All the Icons in my network conections have disappeared plus the search engine for my windows doesn't work nor can I install any programs because it says the windows installer needs to be installed.

I have just recently installed a fresh copy of XP. I had this exact same problem before which caused me to do a few repairs but as it kept happening I decided to do a complete reinstall but STILL this problem is happening. Thankfully I can connect to the internet but I don't like things being wrong, especially as I have spent over a week and a half re-installing and re-re-installing and searching for error solution.

I thought I'd pretty much got things back to normal then I wake up this morning and find the same problem.

I've tried all the solutions listed here and nothing works. Can anyone offer any more explinations? I'm at the end of my tether and exhausted from sitting in front of my machine day in day out for about 11 hours at a time and I don't want to do yet another re-install because it doesn't seem to fix anything!

I'm running windows xp pro with Servicepack 2 on a desktop PC 3.00ghz pentium 4 (I think) 1.5GB Ram!

Thanks to everyone who posted on this thread, the amount of solutions ws amazing but unfortunatly it just didn't work for me!

Please help! I've no hair left from tearing it all out!

Since you can get on the net you mean the icon in the tray?

Set windows update to on (not automatic) I think you will find the windows installer will be presented, also the BITS service thing.
