Automatic Updates not working on clients with XP Pro that refer to C:\Windows

On some clients running XP Pro, the Automatic Updates service will not run. When trying to start the service, one of the two following errors will appear:

Could not start the Automatic Updates service on Local Computer.
Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

or

Could not start the Automatic Updates service on <computername>
Error 126: the specified module could not be found.

The updates do work on some of the clents running XP Pro but the difference is that the systemroot folder refers to C:\WINNT, the others it does not work on referes to C:\Windows. I verified the AU service does point to the path C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k wugroup. Since the systemroot folder or the path in the service can not be changed, how can this be resolved?

Updates fail to install on XP .

Catroot2 folder on your system may be corrupt . Follow the steps mentioned below to rename the Catroot2 folder .

1. Close all open programs, including McAfee or other Anti-virus program.

2. Rename the C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 folder to C:\Windows\System32\CR2OLD by rightclicking on catroot2
and choosing rename. (If you have upgraded to Windows XP from Windows 2000, the CATROOT2 folder should be
located in C:\Winnt\System32 folder).

Now try installing the updates.

Or repair Update .

Still need assistance

I tried all suggestions and unfortunately, the service will still not start. I have been looking into this further and found that the Background Intelligent Transfer Service must be running for the AU service to run. This is not working either. The error we received when trying to start this is:

Could not start the Background Intelligent Transfer service on <computername>
Error 126: the specified module could not be found.

I tried to find more information on the Microsoft website and found this service was updated in XP SP 1. Due to this, I uninstalled the SP and tried, still fails. If anyone has any futher ideas, I would appreciate it. Also, if I happen to give in and pay Microsoft to fix the problem (which should be free) then I will let everyone know the fix. Thanks!

Lightbulb Windows Update Fails

I got Windows Update to work on my Windows XP Home operating system by:

1. Locating the file "host" and renaming it to "host.old" (all without the quotation marks). "host" was located in the C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc folder in my case. The "host" file has no extension associated with it.

2. If you're running Windows XP Pro, NT or 2000, the "host" file should be located in your C:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc folder.

Windows Update should now work without even rebooting.

One can now rename "host.old" back to "host" although I have not and, so far, all's working fine.

Good luck with this problem.
