The firewire drives and USB 2.0 drives are getting up to speed, but you will definitely pay a lot more for the same amount of space. The only situation that would justify the difference in price is if you would have the need to either: back up and store the drive in a physically separate place after backups are completed; or constantly take the drive with you to use with other computers. The internal drives are faster and cheaper, usually better in my book. Why would installing an internal drive be too much effort? There are usually ways around everything.
