External Hardrive?

I currently have Xp installed onto a 40 Gig 50/50 partitioned HD.
I used C for programs and D for Media.
But I am rampantly running out of space due to games and a recent broadband connection.
I am considering getting more Gig and think that C could be good for programs D could be good for games and External could be good for media!
Is this a wise choice as increasing my on board may be to much effort?

I have heard external hard drives are very slow because they are limited by usb. Someone with one may verify that statement as true or false. Its a very easy thing, if you have a spare bay, to install an internal hard drive. They have dropped so much in price this year.

The firewire drives and USB 2.0 drives are getting up to speed, but you will definitely pay a lot more for the same amount of space. The only situation that would justify the difference in price is if you would have the need to either: back up and store the drive in a physically separate place after backups are completed; or constantly take the drive with you to use with other computers. The internal drives are faster and cheaper, usually better in my book. Why would installing an internal drive be too much effort? There are usually ways around everything.
