multimedia audio controller

Hi recently i have encountered problems with my sound card, i can't get any sound! The problem is that my sound card is unrecognized and comes up as multimedia audio controller with a question mark and when i try to update my driver it says that the hardware is not available and that the relevant drivers are missing or not installed, I should have this driver backed up on a cd i received with my pc, which i have lost! I have a dimension 5150 pc (dell) with a creative sound blaster x-fi extreme music sound card I hope someone knows of a way to solve this problem. Thanks in advance for any help. <3

Link to your Dell drivers, audio is listed http://support.euro.dell.com/support...&catid=&impid=

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case

Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

Hi thanks i've solved the problem with regards to the multimedia audio controller and all devices apear to be working in the device manager, with relevant drivers updated, but i can't get any sound at all. I have tried various ways of solving this from deleting the drivers and reinstalling them to formatting the entire pc but still no sound, annoying since the computer doesn't identify any problems. I am unsure what to do any help forthcoming would be great and most appreacciated hopefully my pc won't die from my failed attempts

go to control panel
system
hardware
device manager
right click the +
on sounds audio and games
right click on multi media
choose properties
click troubleshoot
do you get error code
like 29 ..31...39...
if you do try doing this

To fix the error by editing the registry, perform the following steps:

Exit and close all applications currently running on your PC.
On Start > Run type Regedit and press the Enter key.
Next, navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\
SYSTEM\
CurrentControlSet\
Control\
Class\
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Delete any of the following registry entries if they exist under this key:
LowerFilters
LowerFilters.bak
UpperFilters
UpperFilters.bak

Restart your PC and open My Computer to ensure that the CD-ROM drive is visible.
Also, open the Device Manager again to ensure that the yellow exclamation mark and the error code is now gone.

That seems to be the problem you see, in device manager all programs are working properly with no exclamation marks against them, the audio driver is stated as enabled and working properly :? But no sound, it's not the speakers as i've tried them on another computer

I'm not so sure if this has worked for anyone else but it didn't for me let me explain. I tried as you said by deleting any files such as these, as it was I only found lowerfilters in that specified file, can't remeber if it was lowerfilters or lowerfilters.bak. Although I didn't have exclamation marks in device manager next to any points concerning audio devices, or any other for that matter, before I did this, as mentioned in my earlier post everything was running fine and enabled although i didn't specify that there were no exclamation marks in device manager. I stilll did as you said and deleted that single file, after that i couldn't access windows media player or even the internet , the programs wouldn't respond. I restarted my comp and after getting alot of blue screens in a row I managed to find a restore point through safe mode. My point is that little advice nearly destroyed my computer, as I don't know much about computers I wouldn't use commands like these again . Anyhows the sound problem was basically that my sound card was broke, I found this out by first testing my speakers elsewhere, then removing my sound card and placing speaker connection into my intergrated audio, this is the basic audio points that most pc's have anyway without soud cards I think, and I got sound. I hope this has helped anyone else in the same circumstance and thanks to everyone who tried to help

there must be alot more to sound problem if deleteing upper and lower filters .....this fix has come from microsoft
could be your on board sound is gone
you maybe looking at installing a new sound card

after you install your drivers did you check the control panel to see if the settings are ok in audio and sound

go to audio tab and in the drop menu
sound a recorind boxes make sure all the drop menus show your default sound
all mine show realtek if they dont show your sound then set them
click apply and ok to close

in the future when making any changes in the registry
before you delete..just right click the registry file and click export
save as and click desktop and save
that way you can merge it back rather than a system restore
that registry fix has worked for a lot no sound problems
but glad your ok

perhaps one more thing to look at is the bios
it could be that your on board sound could be disabled
