via ide drivers and XP
I'm having some issues with XP trying to install any form of via IDE driver. I had heard that XP should have its own, but they aren't working for me. I have an asus p3v4x board, xp pro, pioneer 16x slot load, LG 24x10x40, fujitsu(I know....) 40gig(capable of ata100 according to fujitsu), and an old seagate 2 gig for linux. My problem is that the windows drive only runs in p10 mode, even though dma is enabled in windows, and the bios. My other drives run at udma mode 2, which is still slower than they should, but ALOT better than p10. I've tried about 5 different versions of the via drivers, and none work. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

The drives are running in dos compatability mode.
Remove the 2 gig drive, or replace with a more updated model to regain full speed.

I've tried removing the older drive completely, and even swapping IDE cables, nothing seems to help. My only guess is a bad driver for the drive... but I have no clue where to find a better one.

DMA mode 2 is right for cd devices.
Is the hard drive on its own channel?
Is it connected using ATA100 cable?

The hard drive is on its own channel, and not using ata100 cable, but it is using ata66 cable(both channels are). I found another post from someone with the same problem... The advice given to them was to uninstall the ide/atapi controller, and reboot. We'll see if that works. Oh, I don't know if this means anything, but when I try to install any version of the via driver(even the supplied version from my motherboard CD) I get an error stating that no matching hardware can be found. BUT in the device manager it shows a via ide/scsi controller, but with no driver found.

I built my computer with a soltek motherboard and didn't have to install any of the supplied drivers that came with the motherboard with xp pro or home, I did have to use them with win2000, and 98se.
I would suggest a full format and clean install and NOT install the via drivers !! let the os supply it's own drivers.
my system runs great this way.

This thread has got me thinking... I notice my hard drive and ESPECIALLY my CD ROM performance IS quite a bit slower than I'd expect from a high-end machine like mine (running an AMD Athalon 2100 on an Asus mobo)... The comment about the hard drive "mode" could be the cause of the slowdown I guess... What should I be looking for as far as the DMA mode, etc. for my drives?
Thanks as always!!

For a recent hard drive/mobo, i would expect DMA mode 5 (or 4 at the very least).
Mode 2 is normal for CD.
