Installing windows 98 on a hard drive with data already on it

In order to salvage some data and reinstall windows on my unbootable drive, I have borrowed a 40Gb hard drive from a friend which has about 16Gb free but no operating system. Is it safe to install 98 on the drive without risking loosing any of the data which is already on it?

I see no problem with that as long as the drive has no windows specific folder (i.e. windows) or file names.
