windows XP not updating

if someone could tell me why this is, i would appreciate it!:

i have XP pro
with SP 1 installed

when ever i try windows update it goes to the page "scanning for updates 0 % complete" and then does nothing

i have tried to change the catroot2 folder name and tried to replace the iuctl.inf file.
the last successful update was:
Successful May 10, 2003 817787: Security Update Windows Media Player for XP

if you could tell me why this is happening i would be very happy

There are a few things... is the date set correctly on your computer? Are you using an illegal copy?

i had been trying google just the wrong search
for some reason unselecting "automatically detect settings" worked!?
