Question Hardware wizard won't work- says it can only add "one device at a time"

I am running Windows XP, and had my computer crash while trying to install a USB 2.0 card on my laptop a while back. I had recently installed a wireless DSL connection at the time, which may have contributed to the problem. I've mostly restored the system, but now my USB ports (the regular ones, not the 2.0) and my firewire port don't work. When I access the "add hardware" option, it says the hardware wizard is already running, that I can only add "one device at a time" and that I can only use it once the pending install is completed. I've tried to go back and remove any reminents of the USB 2.0 card and have cleaned up my device drivers, but to no avail. Any ideas??? Thanks!

Question

Hi there Andrew

I noticed your problem and that it was noted a back in August. I am experiencing a similar problem with my usb ports. They appear to be working. ie when devices are connected they are being detected but the drivers don't appear to be getting installed.

This appears to be linked to my add/remove hardware option which gives the same error you are experiencing "You can install only one device at a time" then "another device installation is underway. when it is finished you an try this wizard again."

My restore points are gone which I've since discovered is a deliberate part of xp (ie they are purged after 90 days) so I can't use those.

did you find a solution as to how to overcome this problem

Sorry, no. Asked all over the place- no responses. I ultimately resinstalled Windows to fix the problem (which turned out to be worth the hassle).
