Windows crashed

I was installing Norton anti-virus 2003 on a Windows XP Home machine after installing the patch for MSBlaster. The Norton install hung up about half way through it & my only option was to turn the computer off. When I turned it back on, it would not boot up. I received an error message saying that I may have hardware or software that may not be installed properly. I tried booting up in safe mode, but I get the same thing. If I could just get Windows to boot up I could delete the installed files & do it again.

Any suggestions on how to avoid reformatting?
