Question on XP Scandisk

I have been using windows 95/98 for the past few years, and just bought a new PC with XP. My power just went out, but when I reboot, there is no scandisk. Is there scandisk on XP, and does it run if there is improper shutdown??

Not automatically (in XP, it's called Check Disk, not scan disk). Microsoft Windows XP is capable of recovering automatically from many disk errors, especially on drives formatted with NTFS. To perform a thorough inspection for errors, you can manually run the Windows XP Check Disk utility, chkdsk.exe. Two versions of this utility are available— a graphical version that performs basic disk-checking functions, and a command-line version that provides a much more extensive set of customization options.

My Computer > (right-click) the icon of the drive you want to check. On the "Tools" tab, click the "Check Now" button. Check both boxes in the Check Disk dialog box.

You'll be told that disk check can't perform until you re-boot. Click "Yes", then re-boot.

One more question

Basically, if improper shutdown does occur, XP automatically recovers from many disk errors by itself without checkdisk, caused by improper shutdown?

I haven't had any disk errors due to improper shutdown (to my knowledge) so I'm not sure how I would qualify the statement "automatically recovers from many disk errors". But, from the literature I've read, I would answer "Yes" to your question.
