56K Lucent Win Modem... or my computer.

Hey everyone. I bought a Hewlett-Packard XE783 (Wal-mart Christmas special, 2 or 3 years ago). 700 Mhz, 512 MB Ram(upgraded), with a 56K Lucent Win Modem. I've used this modem for ages, and now it's becoming rather slowww... Download rates in my area for 56K usually run somwhere between 5-7 Kb/sec. Mine @ 6.4 Kb/sec average. Now it's connecting at like 29300 Bytes per second, which is EXTREMELY SLOWWW... I think my 33.6 on my old computer was better performing! I'm not sure if it's my computer or what. I used a USB U.S. Robotics external modem for a while, but it made the computer run slow, but the connection was a little better... I don't know what's going on. Is there any way for me to check modem settings or whatever? I've tried everything... Thanks in advance guys!(and gals!)

I don't think it is your computer's problem if your INTERNET speed is slower then before. Usually ISP's have Modem pools where end users can dial and login, When one system goes down for what ever reason then they move the user accounts to another system and that could be your issue where you have been moved to 33.6 BPS modem pool. Anyways, there are few command that you could issue to your modem during dialing out which will change the modem speed. See this page for more commands:

you should add " AT&FX&C1&D2S38=0 " to you modem's extra initialization string to boost it to V.90.

cheers

It is my computer's problem, I just haven't figured out where yet... I'm using Earthlink as an ISP, so I know they have 56k pools. I hooked in another computer to the same phone line and it worked great. My computer speed slows down when the external modem is engaged (dialing ISP, surfing, or even idleing<-sp?). External only connects at around 29.2 Kbps. Internal modem doesn't slow computer down, but the connection really sucks... usually 15-19 Kbps. I don't know what's going on with either, I've used NUMEROUS init strings and have the latest drivers for each... Anyone have a clue about any of this??? Thanks Munky!

Internet Connection Setup
Click on Start, Control Panel, then Network Connections. Right click on your Internet connection & select Properties. Then select Configure button.

Maximum speed (bps). Users of 33.6K Modems should set this to 56700, while 56K Modem users should select 115200 .

Enable software compression
Those with Winmodems should Tick this for optimal upload/download speeds, albeit it at the cost of some CPU cycles.

Default below is Unticked .
Negotiate multi-link for single link connections. You can leave this setting Tick unless you experience problems connecting to your ISP (Error code 733 according to Microsoft), in which case Untick this.

Start > Connect To > ISP > Properties > General > Configure .
Enable modem compression
Should you have a Winmodem then you can leave this setting Unticked as these Modems do not support hardware compression.

get rid of the win modem and get a real one - win modems rely on windows os for everything and are going to be slower than non-win modems. you will be happy you did.
