LIMITED USER running Windows Updates\Norton Live Updates

Hi,

I am running Windows XP Professional with two user accounts: Administrator and Limited.

Everything is working as I had hoped with 1 exception......running updates under the limited user account.

Is there anyway to assign special permissions to Windows Updates and Norton Antivirus Professional 2003 so that I can allow the limited user to run the necessary updates??

I have searched Symantec's, Microsoft's as well as google to try to find a solution but so far have had zero luck with it.

ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Well since no one has answered me, I'll try and talk myself through this

Basically since a limited user cannot access or manipulate system files or add\remove programs this is why I can't run updates.

Additionally it seems that since windows updates alter system files there is no way to to Windows Updates under a limited user account.

I hope someone can prove me wrong or shed some light on this for me.

This worked for me

Go into the task scheduler, and choose the "Run AS" and run it under your administrator account. This didnt work the first time I tried it, I ended up deleting the task that Norton created, and just created a new task from scratch and it has worked fine since.

Hope this helps.

Thanks!! I'll give that a shot.

Any advice for running the Windows Updates under a limited account???

Ideally I would like it set up where the users of the system only had limited account access.

I should have mentioned

The scheduled task you want to make sure runs is "Symantec Netdetect" that is the app. that looks to update your .dat files.

You should be able to create a scheduled task to go out and run widows update the same way and choose to run it as your admin account.

The scheduled task option doesn't seem to work correctly. Have you tried this using a limited account ganderson?

First, the computer I am working with is on dial-up. If it isn't connected at the scheduled time, then it can't check for updates.

I also don't think that just enabling the executable alone to run under the administrative account will be enough seeing as it will be changing files not accessable through the limited account.

Yes

I have this set to work for me, as I stated above the process runs when I tell it to and it runs it under admin privileges under the run as portion of the "task scheduler"
Task scheduler as a whole dosent care who is log-on at the time as long as the task at hand is run by an administartor. The whole purpose of this is to be able to have the machine on network with regular user and still allow the Network Admin the ability to have Administrative tasks run, with out having to be at the machine.
The problem for you is going to get it to run when the machine is connected to the internet since it is not a constant connection. you will have to look at the run when options and see what is available that fits closest to your needs.
Both my wife and daughters are limited users and I have this task to run evry 15min and it works fine.

Okay I tried what you said there and it will not run when scheduled to if I am under the Limited User Account.

I have 2 scheduled tasks

i)Windows Update
ii)Norton Live Update

BOTH work perfectly IF I am under the administrator account.

However, when I log in under the limited account neither run..........???????????

I believe it "should" work because if I just click "Run as" by right clicking on the executable while under the limited account and entering in the administrator username\password it works as it should.

Getting close dammit!!!

Okay, I think I have a better alternative than the task scheduler. This should be better suited since the internet connection will not be on for a specified time.

I am attempting to create a batch file to run in the command window using the "run as" command.

https://www.microsoft.com/technet/tr...s_shortcut.asp

I can't figure out the syntax however.......

Have you ever tried this method??
