winxp permission problem (URGENT)

Hello!

Here is the situation:

my friend's told me that he got a virus (Klez.E) and that he can't boot to winxp beacause of it. he has some very important information stored in x:\Documents and Settings\<username> and he BADLY needs his files. so i got his disk but i can't access his "private" directory (Access is denied.). so i got the idea, his files were made "private", but i don't know how to override this.

any ideas?

thanks

There is a "Shared" directory in XP that others can see, but one of the core functions of the XP/NT kernal is the whole idea of protected, secure partitions. Someone with Admin authority (likely his primary logon) needs to get on and share those particular folders and/or files, or you will not be able to view them as far as I know. Sorry don't have a better answer- perhaps someone else here with more XP experience can suggest an alternative?

IF you can, Burn an .iso for your friend. The program to use is Norton System Works 2003. This here sweet little program will eliminate your nasty little virus if you boot off the CD. I recomend using an older version of Blind Write to burn this .iso , it seems to have a strong code written for virus elimination off boot.

you are welcome!

If the file system is FAT, you should be able to get into DOS from a boot floppy (98 or ME), and copy the files into a non-secure directory.

The XP security features should not exist in DOS.

the partition is NTFS! and i have the administrators password! 1. i've tried with the recovery console but i still can't access that folder. 2. i've also tried booting with dos bootdiskete (and NTFS driver on a floppy) but without success. 3. i tried to do a repair installation with winxp cd but the setup program does not find any winxp installations on a disk containing the important files.

i am desperate!
any more sugestions?

thanks for your help!

well try this using norton ghost to image tha whole damn drive onto another drive into a single file then use ghost explorer to access tha files in this one big file. ill almost bet this will work, UNLESS that virus screwed it all up
