Image File Weirdness when transferring to XP?

I'm having a weird issue...

I had a ton of image files on an old PC (running WIn98SE), and I burned the files to a CD-R, then copied them from that CD to my WinXP PC. However, when I try browsing/viewing them I can't open them! XP has them associated correctly with my Paint program (I use Paint Shop Pro), but I see no file extension any longer, and like I said they won't open. I don't think the files are corrupted, because I can copy them to my OLD 98 PC and view them OK. Anyone have any idea what's going on??

Smart. Hey bud check your properties and see if you have these .jpeg or whatever set to Archive. You might have them on lock down from 98SE. Windows seems to play around a bit with burned .jpeg ex. XP also likes to play with my images, so watch out! I have over 20 gigz saved on CD and have dealt with that same issue.

you are welcome.

Hmmmm... never thought of that. So the "Archive" area is just in "Properties" on right-click? If so, how can I UNarchive all the files? I have thousands, and doing each individually will take forever- there msut be a better way.

Thanks for the tip- I'll check it when I get home!

Hey ImagoX

In XP go to ControlPanel/Folder Options/View tab and make sure the box "Hide Extentions for Known File Types" is unchecked. That way you can see the file extentions. If there are no file extentions then right click and choose 'rename' and put a .jpg or .bmp, ect.....on the ends of the files and see if they open up in Paint.

If not sounds like the images maybe got corrupted when you did the burn. Personally I used Roxio but the version I had was no good in XP Pro, so I bought Nero, fantastic software. Even created a bootable CD (called slipstreaming where you apply SP1 to your main XP load disk and then reburn it. Wonderful!!

I have tons of image files (about 10 disks) that I burned and they all open just fine in XP Pro.

Also, when you get them all on the hard drive (or a few of them, just to check it out) right click and go down to the properties and check to see if it's "read" or "archive". It needs to be set at "archive".

Hope this helps you a bit.

Richard

I'll try that- thanks.

I REALLY hope the files aren't corrupted, because after I backed all of them up my HD needed to be reformatted. Seeing as how I can open them on my 98SE machine though I suspect it's more an issue like you describe above- thanks again!

It must have been a corruption issue when I sent the image files from the CD to WinXP. I deleted the folders with non-browsable image files and RE-COPIED them from my burned CDs, and now all is well.

DOes anyone know how to make XP STOP previewing the images in it's own Image/Fax viewer though?? Any time I open a JPG, GIF, etc, it opens in a WINXP window (the Fax viewer), even though I have all my image files associated with Paint Shop Pro. It's trivial, but annoying.

Thanks again all!!

right click on the image file and go down to the properties. You will see the button in the area that says"Type of File" and "open with" click the "Change" button and then if your application is not in the list then it will give you an option to browse over to the Program Files folder and select the .exe of your choice.

Personally, I use Irfanview, a free and FABULOUS viewer that can do SOME image manipulations. The address is: http://irfanview.tuwien.ac.at/english.htm, make sure, if your interested in using it that you also download the "all plugins" file, it's a bit large but it's worth it. I've NEVER met anyone that didin't like Irfanview. It is my number one image viewer. I hated that Microsoft viewer.

One of the things that you will notice is that for EACH file type (.bmp, .gif, jpg, ect.....) that you will have to do this, but just once. So once you choose, say, a .bmp image and do that "adjustment" then all your .bmp images will open with that specified application from there on out.

Hope that helps ya!

WEAK! don't listen to that dude RAW eheh he has no clue. You are better off using Windows Veiwer as the veiwing program all other programs can manipulate your pics or corrupt them IN MAJOR WAYS. Use a secondary program to edit what you wish but keep the windows veiwer trust me you will thank me in a couple of weeks down the road! In my Multimedia business we only use great products like Adobe Photoshop and others...keep it in the right code and use proper programs not 2nd hand pre-production software AHAHHA only sukaz use them. Keep it professional @ all times.

Excuse me oh Sickmade,

I have been in the graphics field for quite a while and while you may be totally sold on Microsoft I am not. Irfanview is a wonderful veiwer and allows for quick, on the fly, photo manipulation. I would not come onto a forum and start giving BAD advice. I take offense that swipe you took at my advice. Irfanview is not like many of the viewers that gets all hooked into the registry, it stands on it's own and can be run from anywhere. You drag an icon from it's folder (if you loose the desktop icon or delete it) and it will run. It's a self contained application. It's been given 5 stars by numerous magazines and online news sites. Why don't you put a search in the local web seach engine and check it out before bashing it!!

Thanks guys...

I do SO MANY image manipulations that all I really want is to have them open direct in Paint Shop Pro. I generally browse thumbnails right in PSP, and these thumbs will open direct in PSP when I use them, but I notice when I click an image in WINDOWS EXPLORER this fax viewer thing happens.

And please don't tell me that PSP is a crap app, either. It's not as powerful as Phtoshop, certainly, but then again I'm NOT doing 4-color offset press images either- I'm just making web and t-shirt graphics and manipulating photos.
