Question Two problems I just can't solve

Hello,

I've been dealing with two separate problem regarding Windows XP and Internet Explorer for quite a while, and was unable to find any solution to any of them. First of all, I should mention I'm working on a PC running Windows XP + Service Pack 1. The installation of Windows XP is pretty new, since I formatted my drive a few weeks ago.

Problem #1:
I used to have a shortcut to the internet connection (through my ISP) in the Start>Programs>Startup. That way, every time I started my computer, the connection would dial and connect. It was very comfortable. However, after I installed Windows XP this last time, and did the exactly same thing (copied a shortcut to the dialer to the startup folder) - it won't work. I start the computer and the connection won't dial. As a matter of fact - it seem like it's not there - nothing happens.
A few comments:
1. When I go to Start>Programs>Startup and ("manually") click the file - it works (the connection dials).
2. I added a shortcut to a .txt file in the same Startup folder, and the TXT file opens every time I start my computer.

Problem #2:
As I mentioned, I'm using Internet Explorer 6. The problem is that very often some of the images\graphics\bullets in web pages wouldn't be displayed. Instead a white box/box with red X will show. The problem has nothing to do with Security\Privacy settings - their both set to their default ("Medium"). Please note that the problem isn't consistent -the same page won't display images X & Y at one time, will display properly at a second time, and won't display image Z at a third time. The page might be displayed properly after hitting the Refresh button. Note that: 1. I cleaned all the History and Temporary internet files. 2. I never experienced this problem in the past (before formatting and re-installing Windows XP).

I'll be thankful for any suggestion, comment, idea etc.. since I've been loaoking for a solution for quite many days now.

Thank you,
David B.

well for problem #1 i would try deleteing that shorcut and makeing a new one.
p.s. this answer to question #1 is a stab in tha dark!!! (i dont even know if it will work but it is worth a shot)

about your #2 question, does that happen only on cartain webpages? or does it seem to randomly happen just about every website u go to?

cause if it happends mainly on a certain website then odds are it is tha sites problem and not your pc, but if it does it just about every site you goto then is probably your pc's fault

Hi NBR and thank you for your answer.
Unfortunately, deleting the shortcut and copying again wouldn't work.
The problem appear in many webpages (even homepages of very larde companies) and its inconsistent, so I don't think it's the pages "fault".

Regards,
David.

well im gonna take another guess.... try this.....

uninstalling SP1 and then reinstall it

probably wont work but there is a chance it could cause since this updates your IE6 to sp1 also it might be possible that it could fix it.

did you have this problem before you installed SP1 for windows xp?

I'm not sure if it's because SP1

The first thing I did after installing Windos XP was to download and install SP-1. I can't uninstall it, since I didn't save the backup information needed.

A Repair install will uninstall SP1; well not really it will just overwite all the SP1 files with the original XP ones.
So if you go trough a Repair install it will put XP back to pre-SP1 days.

But i would not go through a Repair install until you REALLY want to get rid of SP1.

To your internet connection issue: Open an IE page
Go to Tools--Internet Options--Connections.
There is a choice to "Dial whenever a network connection is not present." Make sure that choice is checked.

GOOD LUCK

Grendel hit the nail on the head regarding the dial prob.
As for image loading, Have you tried installing Sun java?. This problem seemed to go away for me after doing this.

Well...

Sun JAVA is installed (but I see the icon in the notification area only someimes).
Regarding the dial-up problem, note that I'm running a dial-up connection (a shortcit to the COntrol Panel > Network Connections > ...)
Anyway, changing the option in IE didn't help.

Start/Control Panel/Internet and Network Connections/Network Connections

You should see your connectoid there, right click, Properties
Advanced menu, click Dial-up Preferences. Check the autodial preferences.

GOOD LUCK

RE problem #2

It could be that you need to reinstall Adobe Acrobat Reader.

This solved some of my problems of this kind.
