"The box claims that older versions of Windows (95/98/ME) do not support drives over 137 GB, so Maxtor has included their Ultra ATA 133 PCI card free of charge. You supposedly need Windows XP sp1 or Windows 2000 sp3 to utilize all 200 GB, but with this card, older Windows versions can use the entire 200 GB.

Now, I have gotten some feedback about the full drive size being supported under different OSes. Some people have been able to use the full 200 GB without the PCI ATA card on Windows 98 SE, and I have been able to use all 200 GB with Windows XP (not sp1). I am not sure how Maxtor came to the conclusion that you needed Windows XP sp1 or Windows 2000 sp3 to use all 200 GB, but apparently they are wrong. By just using the formatting utility found on the included CD, Some people (including me), have been able to use the entire drive space under a single partition in many different OSes that "do not support it." We are talking with Maxtor, and hopefully will have an answer soon."

"Why is the full capacity of my EIDE drive not recognized by the system BIOS?

The system BIOS may not support the drive capacity.
There are several possible solutions.

Check with the system or motherboard manufacturer to see if they have a BIOS upgrade available for your system.

Purchase an ATA controller card (included with Western Digital drives larger than 137GB). The controller card has two benefits. It will have its own BIOS to support the drive and enable the higher transfer rates the drive is capable of attaining. Western Digital's Online Store has a complete selection of ATA controller cards that allow you to access the full capacity of the drive and use the higher transfer rates. " Taken from the WD site.

What capacity does your System BIOS report the Hard Drive size as?

Don't forget the OS will report a much lower capacity than the BIOS because of formatting. My Maxtor 160 gig formats to only 146 gig.

Before you smash it to bits and pieces (As we all do once a while), why don't you pull a trick that was popular on 486 days !!!!! instead of letting your computer auto detecting the hard drive why don't you add the HD parameter in the BIOS manually (Heads, cylinder , sector etc ). I don't know if it will work but it worth to try,,,,in my case I have forced an old Mobo to accept a 60 gig drive by adding manual settings.

cheers
