Cannot specify mail program in IE6

Hi,
I am having problems with all web page e-mail links, when
ever I click on them, either of two things will happen.

On some occasions, my PC just hangs for about 20 seconds,
then, 50+ web pages will be loaded all over my screen,
some are blank and some will displaying the "action
canceled could not find the web page you requested"
message.

Sometimes just the error window "problem with shortcut"
will appear in which it is stated "cannot send mail.No
mail program is set up using internet shortcuts". But,
never will the link do as it is supposed to and just open
a blank, addressed and titled e-mail ready for text.

I am running XP home on a 1.5 p4 with 512 of rambus ram. I
have scanned for viruses with latest AVG up-date and done
an Trendmicro online scan but no viruses have showen up.

I have installed the blaster patch from MS just for good
mesure, and have regularly downloaded all MSwindows up-
dates. I have checked all the relevant setting in Outlook
Express which seem to be ok. As was suggested to me when I
first made this posting in Windows/XP/General, and have
run Adaware6 to remove any spyware as was also suggested
but nothing showed up.

If I just use Outlook Express(my default) on it's own, I
have no problems sending or receiving e-mail, like wise,
when I use IE on it's own I have no problems connecting or
surfing the net.

It just seems as if MS Explorer (latest) and MS Outlook
Express (latest) are not talking to one another. I have
only noticed this problem since I updated to IE version
6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422.1633IS from the MS Windows
update site.

When I looked in Internet Options under the programs tab,
no E-mail program is specified (this is obviously the root
of my problem) and, none are present in the field or drop
down menu to select from. Also, just to make things
difficult, you can't type anything in that field to
specify the e-mail program that you want IE to use(this is
what prevents a soloution) so, I'm stuck.

When I checked the extension, "URL:MailTo Protocol" in
File Types, within the Control Panel:

In the field "Application used to perform action:" is
entered "rundll32.exe url.dll,MailToProtocolHandler %l".

In the field marked "Action:" is entered "open".

There is a check in the "Use DDE.

The field "DDE Message:" is blank.

The "Application" field contains "url".

The "DDE Application Not Running:" field is blank.

The "Topic:" field displays the word "System".

I'm confused, how do I specify my mail program to Explorer
if there is nothing to select from?? Of course, if I
just directed the URL mailto Protocol shortcut to "msimn"
in the C:/Programs/Outlook folder, it will only open
Outlook Express when I click on an e-mail link (at least
it won't open 50> Explorer windows) but it won't open a
pre-addressed and titled blank e-mail ready for text entry
either.

Please Help,

Kim

Maybe repair IE/OE , or try another email client to isolate the problem .

Repair IE6

================================

A really good email client & Spam remover .
I can look at my mail on the ISP's server , delete ( spam removal ) , reply , click on links & if I want it on my comp , click on Move to > Archive .
Use right click for some of the functions .

You can still leave any other email client installed . Just a matter of choosing which one you want as default .
