Windows Update v4 ERROR - ADMIN REQUIRED

I recently came across a problem where windows update asks me to install the new update software. When I say yes, it says that I cant do it because I need to be the administrator for the computer (which I am - the only user infact). Now, Ive never had a problem before now. I did recently update the driver for my M-Audio Card, and I think this may be the root of the problem seeing as how it is not signed or whatever. I tried to rollback the driver, no luck, still problems. Windows media player also crashes. It will play songs or videos, but the window will freeze (except for the music and/or video). I have to opt to "end the program now" to get it to go away, and it wont play any more songs after the first one is over. (I tried reinstalling WMplayer as well).

Try this ...

Create a new user profile with administrator privelidges - 'updater' would be a good name.

Reboot and logon as the new administrator and try again.

If you've logged on to a domain at some time, this might explain the problem.

XP Home, and Ive tried that information.



What seems to be the only solution is the repair/reinstall. This cleared up my problem with windows update but not my other problem:

After searching the web for hours and trying all the registry hacks and reinstalling the Windows Update Agent and renaming the software distribution folder and reregistering the windows update dll and reinstalling IE7 and trying the alternative update sites for Firefox (but that only work for 32 bit XP, I have 64 bit XP) and and and I tried a new admin account and that worked fine. So there must be something wrong with my regular user account.
More out of utter desperation I started poking around in the IE7 security settings and found under Tools > Internet Options > Advanced a section at the bottom of the Advanced tab that resets all IE settings. I clicked on Reset, restarted IE7 and since then don't get the Admin only V4 Windows Update problem.

I guess I mention the fix in case some other lost soul tried everything as I did.
