Cant access administrative console programs

Hi,

I am using xp pro and I am suddenly having problems accessing the administrative console programs. For example, When I try to access the services I receive the error:

Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file.

I have update my virus defs and ran a full system scan. In addition, I do have admin privs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Tim

Can you get access to these admin tasks from safe mode?

Thanks for the reply. I will try to gain access in safe mode tonight. Also, when I used to boot up, a login screen would come up and I would have to click on the only user assigned to the computer in order to access the desktop. This no longer happens.

Thanks again,
Tim

Check your system for malicious code using an up to date Anti Virus program.

Check your system for spyware and adware using a checker such as Spybot.

And its not a bad idea to double- check with a online scan as well. Here is a list of free scans compliments of our own jmatt.

Thanks I will give it a try

Thanks for the replies all. I will run the housecall software link. As mentioned above, I did a full system scan with an up to date norton list and found nothing. Also, I cant access in safe mode. One more thing. On some of the options it asks me for the admin password. I never set this-at least I cant remember setting it or ever needing to use it. Any ideas on how to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Tim

No good news. In my findings, the only way to repair a corrupted administrator account is to do a repair install. Maybe someone will come up with a better remedy. The question remains; why did this happen? Has there been any software installs/uninstalls lately? Any hardware changes?

In the back of my mind, I figured that is what I would have to do.
