installing xp over pirated copy

My nephews win xp is pirated, can I purchase legal win xp proffesional and install it on his computer. I have a portable hard drive, so if I backup his files and settings can I reinstall on the legit win xp.

Would appreciate any help.

yes you can no problem but you are better backing up all what you want saved and doing a fresh clean install of the legal XP disc

Just an FYI, if you boot from the CD, choose the option to install and then REPAIR the install it finds, that will work as well. I've done that on a few occassions for our "less-than-honest" customers who were caught when we needed their orginal CD and COA
