XP Network/ICS Odd problem

Hi,

Host computer is desktop pc with recently installed network card. Client is laptop.

Have managed to get network semi working and now laptop can access internet and sometimes, but not all of the time, access files shared on the desktop pc. However, the host desktop pc can not access the net! Returns an error saying unable to conact server. Have found only way to resolve is system restore and forget the network!

On the host, have input IP of 192.168.0.1 and laptop is auto IP.

There must be some settings I have overlooked but have tried many things. When tried giving laptop static IP lost connection to net and files.

This is really foxing me, but I am sure there is someone there who knows the answer in a heartbeat! Oh btw, have tried with firewall off also but no joy.

Any help? Desperate man here - am in odd position of writing this from the client but can not do from host?!!!?!

Thanks

Try these settings : (This is what i use for my network)

----------------------------------
IP : 192.168.10.10 (For Host)

IP : 192.168.10.20 (For Laptop)

Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0 (Both)

NWLink NetBIOS (Both)
NWLink NetBIOS IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Trasport Protocol (Both)
Client For Microsoft Networks (Both)
File & Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks (Both)

Also, Make sure they are both on the same Workgroup.

Will give that a try, as an update though:

I removed the network card and restored to before the card was added and the internet connection worked fine on host (of course client not connected as card not in machine etc).

Putting the network card back in and installing it, but not connecting to the client, the internet connection did the same again - could connect but not able to find server when it came to web/mail etc.

Oh by the way, tried using NWLink etc, but clinet lost contact with host.

Hmm,

Do you have any firewalls running ? and have you tried pinging the Host the DOS Prompt on the client ?

--

If you don't know how to do it, here it is

Open DOS Prompt, type "cd\" once so your prompt now says "C:>" now type "ping xxx.xxx.xx.xx" (replace xxx as IP).

If you get any failures in there while they are both on the network, tell me. And i will try and think of what it could be.

Networks can be so tempremental.

Have tried with and without firewall but same results.

Have tried pinging the host by IP and machine name both without problem. I pinged client from host and got reply.

It does seem at the moment that the problem starts when I install the network card on the host - have 3 cards I have tried all with the same problem!

Can it be either something to do with the USB ADSL modem not liking a network card present or is it possible I am missing some setting somewhere?

Someone suggested a ADSL router as a solution, however none of these allow a USB modem to attach.

Also heard mention of DHCP and DNS but dont understand them fully so not sure if or how they are connected.

Any more help?! And thanks for the help so far :-)

im getting stumped here lol. well .. mmm

Ok, try doing it this way.

uninstall & remove the modem, and install the network card first. Then install the modem again. after installing the network card.

This might reslove some conflicts that could be going on in the background over giving itself access rights to something ?

Who knows. Give that a go anyway. If not. Back to the good old fasiond way of dealing with things like this *passes you the hammer*

Indeed pass the hammer, its a big big pain!

Have tried all sorts of combinations of installing and setup etc.

One thing I have noticed that prior to network card being installed, windows IP config is set to IP Routing: No and after its set to yes, small change but maybe a cause? Next question is how to turn it back again!

Do you think I am going to have any joy if I used a router of some sort for the network instead? Maybe the kind where the ADSL is routed into the router and to computers from there on?!

Hey, don't MS make it hard to get support!!!!

Exclamation

That could most defaintly be a cause, but how to set it back again is a very good question.

Try disabling it this way :

DISABLE ::

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Tcpip\Parameters] "IPEnableRouter"=dword:00000000

ENABLE ::

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Tcpip\Parameters] "IPEnableRouter"=dword:00000001

------------

I suggest making a backup of your registry b4 trying this, and dont come back here hitting my head if it screws up

If this fails, go get your router

Thanks for that, now in that string it reads:

IPEnableRouter REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)

I havent got a clue how to alter it, modify and modify binary bring up boxes which can not be altered.

Going to consider ADSL router, but with caution - dont want another problem but at greater cost!
