Automatic Update won't download Updates
Hello,
Sometime ago, the automatic update feature stopped working. I have it set to notify me when downloads are available and notify me when it's ready to install them. The icon pops up in the tray, and clicking on it brings up the window with the critical updates.
However, when I click on "Start Download," the icon and windows disappear, but no download happens (the dial-up icon stays blank). Checking at Windows Update confirms that nothing was downloaded. The auto-update service is running.
I am running WinXP Home SP1
Thanks for any help,
Integ

Just a few questions ...
Have you got a 'dial up connection'?
Have you got an active firewall running?
Is the Firwall blocking the Updates application?

Yes, I have a dial-up and firewall. I don't know if the firewall is blocking it, so the next time it pops up, I'll disable the firewall and see if that helps.

There are three button in the "Automatic Updates" box. If you have a tick in the first option, "Notify me before downloading any updates and notify me again before installing them on my computer", then that is all "Automatic Updates" will do - it will notify you. If you want it to download them also, move your tick to the third option, "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
My choice is to be notified when their available. I then go to Windows Update and review what they are and download them after I've seen what they are.

It isn't the firewall, just checked that. The update icon popped up, so I exited the firewall. Clicked on the icon, pressed "Start Download" and once again, the icon and the auto-update window disappeared without downloading anything.
ESALADUANE, On my other computer, I have the first option checked and it works perfectly (as it did on this computer up until a month ago). It notifies me when updates are available, I press "Start Download" and (before it was broken) it would download the updates (all without going to the windows update site).
