Block internet access for screen name

Is it possible to block internet access for only one user's screen name and allow the other screen names on the machine to have full access? I want to block access for a young child who uses the machine. Thank you for your time.

Are you using Dial Up or Broadband (always on)?

Which Browser are you using?

XP Home or Pro?

Which browser?

Does each user have a 'logon' to XP?

You can try going to > start > run > type 'gpedit.msc' > user configuration. I do not know what you will be able to do there as I do not have 'users' here. Be careful of any changes you make and be sure to record changes in case of trouble.

Start > Control Panel > User Accounts >

Select the account you want to edit and thre should be a button or tab around somewhere saying something similar to "access rights"

It's in there somewhere.

beeboy is pointing you to right direction. It is a bit more difficult if you are running stand alone computer rather then a domain computer which gets its policy from domain server, none the less, you could make few changes the will prevent your user to get to Internet.
go to Run and type in gpedit.msc (GP stands for group policy) ,,then go to " user configuration" / Administrative Template / then you can expand "Desktop" and "Control Panel" and "Network" and "system",,, everyone of those option have all kind of policy have disable /enable option which will allow you to make changes into behavior on the operating system. Please remember that if you are going to make the changes, you HAVE to be logged into that specific account to do that. You can't make the changes from your account into another. Also remember that gpedit.msc is very powerful tool so don't make changes where it would lock you /account out.

cheers

How about after creating a new account with there own desktop, you can go to hardware profiles and block any use of broadband connection by limiting it from that profile. I dont remember just how to do it right now and I have to leave. I use to do that to test different hardware settings on computer. Im sure someone will know what I am talking about. They will have there own account, desktop and use of different software and hardware settings. Its in system properties, hardware. Good luck.

When you say screen name are you implying your isp is AOL?
Try a different ISP without the inbuilt dialer set up.
then just normal user config should do the job.

Use Proxy Settings to block IE

I know this is a years old post, but I found it while trying to block access so I guess others will too! Here's my method:

Proxy settings are allocated to individual users. If you use a fake one it fails to connect to external sites. Login as the person you want to block then in IE:

Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings.

Now tick 'Use a proxy server' and enter something rubbish in the address field i.e. werwerwer. If you still want local sites to work (i.e. something on your network) tick 'Bypass for local addresses'.

Now when anyone tries to connect to the internet they get a Page cannot be displayed error. Because everything seems to share this connection, it will also block MSN Messenger.

Not hi-tec, but it works and most people wouldn't know where to look to undo it. If you want to block even this, read some of the info about about group policies and block editing IE's config.
