Unhappy XP Boot Issue...Weird One

My computer at home has become infected with the backdoor.assassin.k trojan. I use Norton, and I went to the Symantec web site, which details how to remove the virus. It told me to reboot the computer in safe mode. So, I ran ‘msconfig’, clicked the safe boot option, and restarted. Upon reboot, everything is normal until after the Windows XP splash screen w/the blue progress bar. When the splash screen disappears, the monitor disconnects (the power light on the monitor flashes on and off). It seems like the computer freezes or just plain dies on me. The screen turns black, and my monitor disconnects i.e. the monitor power light flickers on an off. I tried booting back into normal mode and lkgc mode, but the same thing occurs. I also pulled out and reinserted the video card. Any ideas of what might be happening? Is this a virus, video card, or OS issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated...

It is most certainly virus related. I am having trouble finding any info on that bug. Is that the correct name?

I was just reading other posts and may have some more info. My computer has never restarted properly. It always hangs when I initiate a restart. The same thing occurs: the monitor disconnects and the power light flickers while the computer doesn't do anything...it is still running, though. Shutting down from Windows always work without issue. Maybe after the splash screen loads, Windows is rebooting itself but can't.

Regardless, why would Windows reboot itself after the splash screen?

I am seeing the same problem as that described by qdaddyo. I'm using a laptop and also have a standard CRT monitor attached. Today the monitor started disconnecting at the XP login screen. It shows the standard start-up at first, but then the screen goes black and the power light flickers. I also use Norton, have downloaded the latest update (from today), have run a full system scan, and have found no viruses! Any suggestions out there?
